Construction and assembly works are restarted at ISF-2 construction site

Company «Holtec International» (Pittsburgh, USA) started construction and assembly works at theconstruction site of Dry Type Interim Storage Facility 2 (ISF-2).

Ukrainian construction company "UTEM-Engineering" (the General Contractor for constructionand "Ukrtransbud" corporation will perform the work after entering into the Contract in August 2014 with «Holtec International» for services provision for constructioninstallation and pre-commissioning.
The process of construction site transfer from the Employer (SSE Chernobyl NPPto the Contractor is underway during the weekstarting from October 06and then the Contractor will start general mobilization and preparatory activity for construction.

Works execution designs and associated works permits are under development in parallel to this and large-scale work on ISF-construction continuation will start inmid-November.

At the same time within October-December 2014 it is planned to perform surveyand testing of existing equipmentsupplied and installed byISF-previous contractorin order to identify its performance and need for restoring repair.

Completion of ISF-2 stipulates modification of existing structures of the facility in order to improve its safety in compliance with the requirements of the effective Nuclear and Radiation Safety rules and reduce the risks associated with Spent Fuel Assemblies management and storage.

All FA management processes, including acceptanceunloading, cutting, drying, packing, sealing and placement of long-term storagewill be fully automated.

After commissioning ISF-2 will ensure acceptance for storage, preparation for storage and safe storage of more than 21,000 spent fuel assemblies from RBMK-1000 within 100 years at the productivity 2500 FAs per year.

20.02.2013Chernobyl NPP obtained the license of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine on "Construction and commissioning of a nuclear installation (spent fuel storage ISF-2)", valid until 02.20.2018.

The permission of the State Architectural and Construction Inspection of Ukraine for the construction work at the ISF-2site was obtained on 02.09.2014.
