WANO Technical Support Mission is completed at Chernobyl NPP

WANO Technical Support Mission is completed at Chernobyl NPP, which took place since 15 to 18 October. The event was held at the request of ChNPP and was devoted to Safety assurance problems during preparation of uranium- graphite units for long-term storage under supervision (preservation).

The purpose of the mission in the first turn, was to share experience and knowledge in the field of NPPs decommissioning, as well as review of approaches and technologies, used in the uranium-graphite reactor decommissioning and optimization of ChNPP Units decommissioning strategy.

WANO Moscow Centre experts and Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s specialists participated in this mission. As Valery Seida, SSE ChNPP First Deputy General Director, emphasized, this mission is very important, because works within the Project of ChNPP Final shutdown and Preservation (FS and P) will be launched in the nearest future. "Assistance of colleagues from the Moscow Center is especially important also because 11 RBMK are in operation at the territory of Russia and preparatory works to decommission them are actively underway" - said Valery Seida.

During the mission Chernobyl NPP’s specialists provided information about Chernobyl NPP decommissioning progress, status of FS and P Project and Project’s challenges were discussed. Russian team presented the experience gained in terms of irradiated graphite management from decommissioned reactors and their safety improvement during preparation for decommissioning. The mission team also reviewed existing and planned plant’s infrastructure for decommissioning.
