On May 24, as part of a working visit, representatives of the management team of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), headed by the NASU’s President Anatolii Zahorodnii, arrived to the Exclusion Zone and Chornobyl NPP.
The visit was aimed at deepening the scientific support of activities in the Exclusion Zone, including activities on the decommissioning of the Chornobyl NPP and transformation of the Shelter Object into an environmentally safe system.
The NASU’s management held a working meeting at the ChNPP industrial site with a Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) Yevhen Kramarenko, Acting Director General of Chornobyl NPP Valeriy Seyda and the mayor of ChNPP satellite town Slavutych Yuri Fomichev.
“We really wanted to get acquainted with the activities being carried out at the ChNPP site nowadays, and obviously, we wish to expand our cooperation with the Chornobyl NPP. Today, with the Head of SAUEZM and the management of ChNPP, it was discussed that it would be good to create a scientific hub, and in this way to expand our cooperation involving other institutes of our Academy. We see this as our future," — commented the visit Mr. Zahorodnii.
As a part of the visit to the Plant, the NASU’s members also made a tour to the Control Room of Unit 3, Central Hall of Unit 3, Memorial to Valerii Khodemchuk, former Control Room of Unit 4, and under the Arch of the New Safe Confinement.
In addition, the guests visited the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISP NPP) in Chornobyl town and observed the premises where the ISP NPP’s laboratory building is planned to be accommodated soon. The visit to the Exclusion Zone was completed in Prypiat, a former town of nuclear operators.
“The ISP NPP is a long-time partner of Chornobyl NPP. This Institute conducts a number of important researches aimed at ensuring the safety of the complex decommissioning processes. The deepening of this cooperation is an essential component of this process and we are looking forward to many years of future cooperation,” — summarized the visit Mr. Seyda.
