On 18 March, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) visited Chornobyl NPP industrial site. The purpose of the visit was to conduct a detailed inspection of the damage caused by the Russian drone attack on the New Safe Confinement (NSC).
The delegation, which included senior managers of EBRD’s Nuclear Safety Department, observed the NSC technological building, main volume, and the main crane system’s northern maintenance garage. Additionally, they held a working meeting with representatives of the Chornobyl NPP management.
As a reminder, the attack on 14 February of this year using a drone equipped with high-explosive warhead launched by the russian federation, caused significant damage to the NSC external and internal cladding, main crane system maintenance garage and its bolted connections. For nearly two weeks, units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine worked to extinguish and suppress smouldering fires in between the insulation layers of the NSC external cladding.
Background Information. On 4 March, an extraordinary EBRD ICCA Assembly meeting, participated by the Ministry of Environment of Ukraine and the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, approved the allocation of €400,000 from the administrative budget of the Account for specialist-led damage assessment. This assessment is essential to initiate the restoration process of the NSC as quickly and efficiently as possible.
