On 27 March 2025, a delegation of the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA) headed by Director General Per Strand visited Chornobyl NPP. The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the current state of the ChNPP and to observe the damage to the New Safe Confinement (NSC) caused by the Russian drone strike on 14 February 2025. The visit took place within the framework of the Nansen Government Programme for Ukraine aimed at supporting the nuclear safety and security of Ukraine in the context of the ongoing Russian aggression.
The delegation had the opportunity to observe the NSC’s technological building, main space beneath the arch and the northern garage of the Main Cranes System which was most affected by the attack, and to witness firsthand the damage caused by the Russian drone.
Per Strand noted that this attack undermined the extensive efforts of the international community to eliminate the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster.
During the visit, a meeting was held with ChNPP management to discuss the results of cooperation, the current situation at the plant and possible areas of further support from Norway.
At the end, Per Strand confirmed Norway’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine in the field of nuclear safety and security, with a particular focus on restoring the NSC’s operational capabilities.
