On the 26th of June 2013 a meeting of SSE “Chornobyl NPP” Scientific and Technical Council (STC) on a topic: “The possibility and feasibility of survey of SSE ChNPP Unit 4 Turbine Hall building structures” was held at the premises of PJSC Kyiv Research and Design Institute “ENERGOPROEKT”.
Representatives of the State Agency on Exclusion Zone Management, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, PJSC Kyiv Research and Design Institute “ENERGOPROEKT” (General Designer), Institute for NPP Safety Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Research Manager) and State Enterprise “State Scientific and Research Institute of Building Structures” took part in the STC meeting.
Based on the results of the ChNPP proposals considered at the meeting in terms of eva-luating the state of Unit 4 Turbine Hall building structures taking into account recommen-dations given by the experts, the ChNPP Scientific and Technical Council took the following Decision:
1. To implement analytical evaluation of the current state of Unit 4 Turbine Hall building structures for making justified decisions on the further activity.
2. According to the results of the specified evaluation to determine and perform the necessary scope of survey of Unit 4 Turbine Hall building structures calculating the probability of their collapse.

On December 10-14, 2012, the workshop is being held housed by Kiev Institute “EnergoProekt”. The workshop is organized under IAEA Technical Cooperation Project “Support of Decommissioning and Waste Management of ChNPP, INPP and A1 NPP”. SSE “Chornobyl NPP” is the organizer of the event.

The experts of IAEA, Technicatome AREVA T (France), the representatives of Ignalina NPP, Energy Institute of Lithuania, State Nuclear Energy Safety Inspectorate of Lithuania, Slovakian company “VUJE a.s.”, the representatives of Lvov, Odessa and Kharkov State Inter-Regional Special Industrial Complexes of the State Corporation “RADON”, Chornobyl NPP, Chornobyl Radiological Center “ECOCENTER”, State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management, SSTC for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, and State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine are participating in the workshop.

The objective of the workshop is to review prerequisites for improvement, planning and building of radioactive waste management facilities to meet waste acceptance criteria for storage, disposal and decommissioning of specific systems at ChNPP, INPP and A1 NPP.

In the framework of the workshop, there were presented reports on available and future facilities for waste management at ChNPP, within Exclusion Zone and in Ukraine, and management of radioactive waste generated at Ukrainian NPP sites. The experience of Lithuania and Slovakia in RAW management was also presented.

Issues on synergies in operation, construction and licensing of waste management facilities, understanding of waste characteristics as key prerequisite to select optimized technologies of radioactive waste treatment, storage and disposal are in the focus of attention.

During the workshop, methods of determining waste characteristics to optimize designing of waste management facilities are reviewed, and methods of determining waste characteristics applied in Ukraine, Slovakia and Lithuania during different stages of RAW management are discussed.

On December 13, the workshop participants visited ChNPP site and got familiar with waste processing facilities. The “Buryakovka” Waste Disposal Site, “Vektor” Complex, Chornobyl and Pripyat scheduled for tour visiting became unavailable due to snow drifts.

On November 30, 2012, the works on removing conditioned spent nuclear fuel from Chornobyl NPP Unit 2 were completed.

The works were performed in accordance with a Separate Permit No.000040/1-21 issued by SNRIU on December 22, 2011 Twenty one spent fuel assemblies are currently remaining at Unit 2 storage pools.

Their discharge will be carried out after Unit 1 storage pools release from conditioned spent nuclear fuel.

There were organized 10 scientific visits of Chornobyl NPP specialists to the NPP site facilities of Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania and other countries in the frameworks of IAEA technical cooperation projects. This is an important and necessary part of cooperation, which allow learn the obtained already experience and then apply it at the site. It is a pleasure to mark that to obtain an experience anybody comes to Chornobyl NPP now. This is a major achievement in the international cooperation and high job rating of ChNPP specialists.
Since October 11 up to 15 on the request of Lithuania Government, IAEA organized the scientific visit to ChNPP site the delegation of Lithuania. The purpose of it was the familiarization with ChNPP experience in the field of technologies and creation of infrastructure for radioactive waste management, learning of Ukrainian normative and regulatory requirements in the field of RAW management. The delegation consists of Agency Director on Radioactive Waste Management (RATA) Mr. Dainius Yanenas, Head of Division on Radioactive Waste Management of Lithuanian State Inspectorate on Nuclear Safety (VATESI) Mr. Darius Lukauskas, Head of Decommissioning Department of Ignalina NPP Mr. Antanas Budraitis, Head of Project Management Unit of Ignalina NPP Mr. Dmitriy Pokidyshev.
The key part of Lithuanian delegation visit was devoted to visiting facilities on radioactive waste management at ChNPP. The Lithuanian specialists discussed with NPP managers some substantial problems concerned with RAW management at decommissioning. In particular, the problems of waste characterization, technologies of waste conditioning, approaches to waste storage, criteria of waste acceptance were of great interest.
These problems were discussed as during at specially organized meetings, so during visiting facilities. On October 11 the Lithuanian delegation visited Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant, hold meetings with Chemical Shop specialists and on October 12 together with specialists of Solid RAW Treatment Shop got to know with Industrial Complex for Solid RAW Management.
The Lithuanian specialists marked that their visit to ChNPP completely justified their expectations: “We like looked to our future”.
On October 13 the delegation visited RWDF “Buryakovka” and “Vector” where the meetings with specialists of SSE “Technocentre” and “Complex” were organized and on October 14, 15 continued their work at SNRCU and MES.
