On 11 July, the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA) Assembly meeting of donors took place in London. ChNPP’s Acting Director General Serhii Martynov took part in the meeting.
The discussion which was held mainly online focused on the energy and environmental issues of Ukraine, in particular the ones caused by the armed aggression of the russian federation.
At the meeting, Norway and Great Britain announced their additional contributions worth over UAH 200 million (EUR 5 million) to the Account.
The core part of the Assembly meeting was reviewing several issues related to the Shelter facility. This year expires the guaranteed service life of the Shelter’s unstable structures that had been reinforced within stabilization activities in 2004-2008. A lot has been done for the commencement of activities under the NSC Commissioning Stage-2 before the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine. However, due to the occupation of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone by russian troops during February-March 2022, the infrastructure of this area suffered significant losses. Therefore, for planning purposes necessary surveys need to be performed to start dismantling of Shelter’s unstable structures.
Among other issues, the meeting discussed aspects of Grant Agreement No.2 which include activities on further transformation of the Shelter into an environmentally safe system. Following the discussions, the Grant Agreement no.2 was approved providing for an allocation of about UAH 70 million from the Account aimed at ensuring safety and infrastructure at Chornobyl NPP.
