26 April 2016, Third Amendment to Grant Agreement was signed between EBRD, the Government of Ukraine and SSE Chornobyl NPP on allocation of additional funding for ISF-2 construction completion

On the 26th of April 2016, Nuclear Safety Account Pledging Conference was held at Chornobyl NPP. In the presence of Petro Poroshenko, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak, Director of the State Specialized Enterprise Chornobyl NPP Igor Gramotkin and President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Suma Chakrabarti signed the Third Amendment to the Grant Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and State Specialized Enterprise Chornobyl NPP as Recipient and EBRD.

This will guarantee the additional funding from the Nuclear Safety Account to complete the construction of Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility of dry type (ISF-2).

President Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude to the representatives of donor countries for assistance in mitigating the consequences of the tragedy.

We are deeply grateful to the international community, especially the EBRD, Japan as a G7 Presidency, to the United States and other G7 countries, as well as to the European Union, for your valuable and timely help. This is an important act of solidarity with Ukraine, which inspires confidence that jointly we will overcome the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster. Our wish is to change the paradigm and to implement a new approach to managing Chornobyl zone. This is a right investment in a right case - making our world a safer place We believe that someday in the future this area will become known not only for its tragedy, but also for inventions and findings made here, the Head of State noted. He also noted that Ukraine appreciates the international assistance projects, support for power generation, and social and research projects implemented.

FYI: Ukraine has been attracting donor assistance for the implementation of the Chornobyl projects since 1993. One of the key partners of our country in this area is the EBRD. The set up Nuclear Safety Account, which is managed by the Bank, is contributed by Belgium, Canada, Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine and the United States of America.

On April 25, during a briefing in Kyiv, EBRD President, Mr. Suma Chakrabarti and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Mr. Shigeki Sumi, and G7 countries together with one of the major creditors of Ukraine which is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as well as other donors expressed their readiness to provide Ukraine about EUR 85 million to complete the project on construction of storage facility for spent nuclear fuel of “dry type”.
