Main Cranes System was tested after modification from February 18 till February 22 at New Safe Confinement site.

The purpose of the tests was to demonstrate the safe system operation after installation of additional elements on the cranes bridges.

The Main Cranes System (hereinafter: MCS) is a complex of equipment that will be a key tool for the Shelter object dismantling. It includes 2 beams, which can move independently under NSC arch. The system is remotely controlled from the technological building.

Earlier the problem of exceeding of the torque of electric motors on MCS bridges drives was revealed during inspections. After implementation of a series of measures to eliminate the causes, the company of cranes manufacturer PAR Systems (USA) has implemented a number of measures related to MCS mechanical part and control system.

During the above-mentioned tests MCS performance at maximum loading (100 tons per bridge), movement of each of the bridges with one switched off driving motor (in total there are 12), functioning of the bridge positioning system were checked, as well as the bridges were moved along the entire length of the crane tracks (from the western wall to the space above the Shelter object).
As a result, the tests showed a positive effect of MCS modification. However, there was a need to improve some functions in MCS control and monitoring system, completion of the bridging positioning system testing and the adjustment of certain mechanical components.

Experts from SSE ChNPP, Shelter Implementation Plan Project Management Unit, NOVARKA company, as well as State Nuclear Regulation Inspection of Ukraine and State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety were involved in the tests.
