The first concrete storage module (CSM) at a new interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel (i.e. ISF-2) was filled on July 29.
This event is another achievement in operation of ISF-2. It confirms that the fuel transportation is performed in line with the adopted procedure and in compliance with all safety standards.
As a part of the nuclear non-proliferation measures and in order to guarantee the security of spent fuel placed for storage, the filled CSM was sealed by a special digital seal of IAEA. The seal integrity is 24/7 monitored from the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna. In the event of attempts of unauthorized access to the fuel, work of the whole ISF-2 will be suspended and special investigation will be initiated.
For your information, each concrete storage module of ISF-2 consists of four cells, into which double-walled canisters (DWCs) are placed. As of today, 372 spent fuels assemblies (SFAs) were loaded for storage. In total, more than 21,000 SFAs are to be transported for the storage within the next 10 years.
