On 14 December, Ukraine and the world honour the Liquidators of the Consequences of the Chornobyl Unit 4 Accident.
The harsh and tragic reality that followed the explosion at the ChNPP Unit 4 led to a different perception of the world, because humanity has never known such a technological catastrophe before. Chornobyl has become a black mark for millennia to come.
This is how it is done all over the world: in the hour of great calamity, in times of mortal danger, the bravest stand first. Thousands and thousands of first responders at the cost of their own lives and health shielded the world from the horrific rays of radiation – among them firefighters, doctors, military, law enforcement, builders, drivers, mechanics, and of course at the front line – workers of Chornobyl NPP.
1986 showed that sometimes calm, routine, professional performance of work, carried out in emergency and critical conditions, is a real feat of heroism. Heroes are those who in tragic hours do not lose confidence, responsibility and a sense of duty. Each such person makes the world safer and more stable.
More than 620 thousand persons took part in the accident elimination at Chornobyl NPP. Some of them are still working at the plant.
The solemn event at the Memorial to the Chornobyl Victims near the ChNPP Administrative Building was visited by the plant’s management and staff, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi and representatives of the Ministry, Deputy Head of State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Maksym Shevchuk, and others.
On the occasion of the Liquidator’s Day, employees of ChNPP laid flowers to the Statue “Atlantes of Chornobyl”, Monument to the Shelter Constructors, Memorial to Valerii Khodemchuk, and to the Memorial to the Chornobyl Victims in Slavutych.
Honour and deepest gratitude to all Liquidators.
