Chornobyl NPP employees led by Acting Director General Oleksandr Titarchuk participated in the 69th session of the IAEA General Conference held in Vienna, at the Agency’s headquarters in September 2025.
ChNPP specialists, who worked on the sidelines of the conference, took part in issue-related events and meetings. Delegations, experts, and the IAEA office visitors were provided with the most extensive information on the Chornobyl NPP activities. Current and prospective cooperation, problematic issues and ways to solve them were discussed with the IAEA officers and foreign delegations.
In addition, as part of the General Conference, an event was held on September 18, and it was entirely devoted to the challenges caused by the russian drone attack on February 14 of this year. As the Engineering Centre Manager Maksym Protsenko, one of the conference participants, notes the attendees were presented with the comprehensive information on overcoming the aftermath of the drone strike on the NSC Arch as well as on plans for the Arch emergency repair and the confinement restoration.
An exhibition booth was set up during the conference, and it had a visual series and awareness materials on the drone attack, damage to the NSC protective cladding and systems, and current measures taken and continued to be taken at the Chornobyl NPP to minimize the consequences of the russian unmanned combat aerial vehicle attack.
“During the presentation, it was highlighted that the NSC Arch, like any other civilian industrial facility, is not designed to withstand the strike of the missile, artillery or other weapons. The world community must realize that any strikes on such critical and complex facilities almost always result in loss of the facility's functions, and their restoration requires significant financial, material and human efforts.
Currently, experts are conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the NSC Arch's condition. In July 2025, a contract was signed between the EBRD and Bouygues. Its purpose is a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused to the NSC by the drone attack and strategic recommendations for restoring the confinement functionality.
We also emphasized that in order to assess independently the NSC-OS facility safety after the drone strike, to obtain recommendations for risks mitigation, to enhance preparedness for emergency scenarios and to update strategic plans for unstable structures dismantling it would be appropriate to conduct an IAEA comprehensive safety assessment mission at the SSE ChNPP site,” Maksym Protsenko said.
