The delegation from the European Investment Bank (EIB) visited the the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant on October, 31. Bank representatives familiarized themselves with the work of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and other enterprises on the territory of the Exclusion zone under martial law and paid the special attention to those areas of activity in respect of which the EIB may initiate the future cooperation.
The administration of SSE «Chornobyl NPP» informed the delegation about the key challenges, the main of them remains the constant threat of attacks by the russian federation. It was emphasized that despite the difficult conditions, the staff continues to implement the current programs of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in particular, the management of radioactive waste, decommissioning of power units and the development of the infrastructure of the Exclusion zone.
In the context of the threats of russian aggression, EIB representatives were shown the consequences of the February attack by an enemy drone, which damaged the integrity of the confinement and caused a fire at the facility.
Currently, specialists have carried out the urgent repair work, which made the possibility to temporarily stabilize the situation, but in the future the confinement requires thorough restoration work.
The parties also discussed the areas of the work regarding the further cooperation could be initiated. The EIB is a reliable partner of Ukraine during the years of full-scale war. It is supporting the important sectors of the economy and investing in the reconstruction of the country. Therefore, cooperation with the bank can become a significant contribution to the development of the Chornobyl NPP.
«The support of our partners remains very important for the plant. With joint efforts, we managed not only to take huge steps to overcome the consequences of the accident in 1986, but also to restore the normal life of the plant after the russian occupation in 2024. Currently, our specialists are studying the possibilities of the future cooperation with the European Investment Bank – both in the field of security and long-term programs.
For our part, we already have the certain developments and proposals and in the future we will coordinate the details directly with EIB », – noted the General Director of SSE «ChNPP» Serhii Tarakanov.
