On 20 November, a delegation from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), headed by Director General Mr. Michael Knochenhauer, visited the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

During the visit, Swedish radiation safety experts received detailed information about the current status of the Chornobyl NPP and the key tasks being carried out by the plant’s personnel.

The delegation toured several Chornobyl NPP facilities, including Control Rooms of Units 3 and 4, and paid tribute to Valerii Khodemchuk at the memorial plaque installed on the wall of the biological shield separating the destroyed unit. The visitors also visited the Central Control Room, the main volume beneath the New Safe Confinement Arch, the NSC observation square, and ISF-2.

Sweden has been one of Ukraine’s key international partners in the efforts to address the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster. It was also a donor to the Chernobyl Shelter Fund, through which the New Safe Confinement was constructed. Today, SSM continues this cooperation by successfully implementing around 15 nuclear and radiation safety projects with Ukrainian partners.

Such visits enable Swedish experts to see first-hand the progress made in transforming the Shelter into an environmentally safe system and to coordinate further joint steps.
