Personnel from Spent Nuclear Fuel Management Shop (SNFMS), Repair and Dismantling shop, Main Building and external constructions operation shop is involved in the works on the spent additional absorbers movement. It is expected to complete the movement by the end of this year.

Necessity to perform this work is related with the fact, that Projects currently implementing at ChNPP industrial site, such as Dry Type Spent Nuclear Fuel Disposal Facility ISF-2 and Long Length Waste cutting Facility at Unit 2 does not stipulate spent absorbers management.

It was decided to move SAA at Unit 3 on the basis of the results of ChNPP Scientific and Technical Council meeting, during which options has been considered for special items management in general and in particular SAA management at Chernobyl NPP. It is expected to create an additional unit for Long Length Waste cutting at this Unit. Moved at Unit 3 special items will be stored here until new commissioning the new unit for Long Length Waste cutting.

As the Deputy Chief of SNFMS Mr Alexei Volodchenko emphasized, chosen strategy allows to reduce the time of implementation of Units 1, 2 Final Shutdown and Preservation Stage.

Chernobyl NPP ensures monitoring of Nuclear Safety, Nuclear Materials accounting and control, as well as IAEA safeguards implementation.

Cores of all three reactors are free of Nuclear Fuel. Standard Nuclear Fuel is retrieved from cooling pools. Measures to improve the safety of ChNPP nuclear installations, including ISF-1 are under way.

Nuclear and Radiation Safety, status of the Shelter object main building constructions, seismic activity in surrounding area is controlled by the Integrated Automated Monitoring System. Exceeding of the established control levels wasn’t recorded.

All Nuclear Installations and Shelter object are under IAEA Safeguards and equipped with surveillance system and system for detection of unauthorized movement of nuclear materials.

From 17 to 20 March 2014 the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine conducts inspection at SSE ChNPP prior to issue individual permits for LRTP commissioning ("active" testing of LRTP ) and ICSRM (Stage 2 of the "hot" tests).

Comprehensive non active tests (using RW simulators) of LRTP systems and equipment and 1st stage of ICSRM "hot" tests were carried out in October 2013. In November 2013 ChNPP sent the package of application documents for continuation of these facilities commissioning.

Obtaining of individual permits will allow performance of the subsequent stages of ICSRM and LRTP commissioning, during which Radioactive Waste packages will be obtained.

First Deputy Chairman of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate - Chief Inspector of Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Mr Mikhail Gashev visited Chernobyl NPP on March 12, 2014 with a working visit.

M.H.Gashev acquainted with the progress of international technical assistance projects: Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management (ICSRM), Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant (LRTP), New Safe Confinement (NSC) construction, as well as completion of the Dry Type Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (ISF- 2). During the visit, M-r Gashev held working meeting with the Plant’s management and Project Management Units representatives on these issues.

Journalists of Channel 5, STB, 1 +1, BTV and NTN visited Chernobyl NPP and familiarized with arrangement of stepped up security measures at the plant and with peculiarities of line of personnel duty within the period of increased security measures.

Media representatives met with ChNPP General Director – Mr Igor Gramotkin, Deputy General Director for Physical Protection – Mr Yevgeniy Katunin, Chief of the Military Unit 3041 – Mr Andrei Frolov, and talked with military servicemen of special purpose platoon No 3041.

At the end of the visit guests visited the Shelter object’s Observation Pavilion and familiarized with New Safe Confinement construction.

Works on pre-assembling of a heavy lift crane were commenced within the frame of the project on recovering the containment of Unit 4 Turbine Hall. A three-dimensional block of the Turbine Hall roof will be installed into the design position by this crane.

For this purpose the construction site was prepared and crane runways were assembled within the Shelter Object Local Zone. Works on assembling the metal structures of the three-dimensional block of the Turbine Hall roof (without profiled sheeting), by which the accident opening in the roof and wall of Chernobyl NPP Unit 4 Turbine Hall will be closed, also were completed.

Restoration of the destroyed section of the roof and zones of wall panels’ collapse will result in recovery of ChNPP Unit 4 Turbine Hall confinement integrity that is the part of the Shelter Object contained facility.

For your reference. A partial collapse of wall panels and a section of Unit 4 Turbine Hall light roof occurred on February 12, 2013. The destruction area equaled about 600 m2.
The works on recovering the containment of Unit 4 Turbine Hall are implemented within the frame of the project developed by Kyiv Institute Energoproject. The construction and erection activities at the site are performed by Ukrtransbud Corporation.

The Report issued by the SE “Ukrderzhbudexpertiza” confirms that the FS&P project documentation was developed in accordance with the requirements of sanitary and ecological legislation, building regulations, operational safety, engineering support, regulations of fire, nuclear and radiation safety, health and safety, and energy saving.

The project works will be performed by stages:

Stage 1 – Reconstruction of ChNPP fire fighting water system.

Stage 2 – Dismantling and cutting of fuel channels and CPS channels of Units 1, 2, 3.

Stage 3 – Preservation of reactors and containment of preservation zone of Units 1, 2.

Stage 4 – Reconstruction of hipped roofs of reactor facilities’ central halls and dismantling of hoisting machines of Units 1, 2.

Stage 5 – Reactor preservation and containment of preservation zone of Unit 3.

Stage 6 - Reconstruction of a hipped roof of reactor facility’s central hall and dismantling of hoisting machines of Unit 3.
