On 18 February, a series of meetings were held at the Chornobyl NPP focused on comprehensive review of the problems that arose as a result of damage by a russian drone to the New Safe Confinement, a structure known worldwide and created with financial, technical and material assistance from many countries of the world.
In the morning, representatives of Ukrainian research and construction institutions discussed with Chornobyl NPP management and technical experts the progress in overcoming the consequences of the strike and the measures necessary to restore the protective shell of the New Safe Confinement as much as possible. During the meeting, ChNPP experts presented in detail all levels of the problem caused by the damage to the NSC.
On the same day, Svitlana Hrynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Oleh Bondarenko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, and their accompanying persons visited the ChNPP industrial site.
Together with representatives of the operational headquarters at the ChNPP, headed by the Chairman of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Hryhorii Ishchenko, the government officials inspected the damage caused by the drone with a combat explosive warhead and talked to rescuers and specialists of the operational headquarters who monitor the site 24/7.
According to the Ms Minister, the liquidation of the consequences of the Russian terrorist attack is in process:
- The radiation level at the site has not changed since 14 February. The radiation situation is under constant control. This was also confirmed by the IAEA experts who inspected the damage and made their own measurements.
Russian war creates new challenges for nuclear safety. Attacks on our infrastructure continue. The events at ChNPP are the line that Russia has once again crossed, because the New Safe Confinement was built to protect against radiation threats, but not from armed aggression.
Svitlana Hrynchuk also emphasised that cooperation with partners and donor countries is ongoing:
- The EBRD has assured us of its support for the safety of the Chornobyl NPP and its readiness for joint efforts to mitigate and eliminate the consequences of this aggression. Technical consultations are next in line.
