Pre-assembling of spatial unit to cover opening arisen as a result of Unit 4 Turbine hall wall constructions collapse is started.

Upon information provided by plant’s Construction service as of January 9, 2014 all necessary metal constructions were delivered to Chernobyl NPP’s industrial site, 10 percent of them are already installed in the future spatial unit. Total weight of the entire unit will be 53 tons. It should fully close an emergency opening arisen as a result of abnormal event, occurred February 12, 2013.

Work within theproject "RecoveryofthesafeenclosureofChNPPUnit 4 TurbineHallbetweenaxes 46-52 andA- B" is performedbythecontractor - "Ukrtransbud" CorporationincooperationwithChernobylNPP. Earlier, in accordance with the project schedule contracting organization personnel dismantled emergency concrete wall panels, joining constructions between the columns, as well as reinforcement of the upper damaged panels.

Crane КС–8165 with lifting capacity 100 tons was delivered to the Chernobyl NPP industrial site. It will be engaged into works on recovering the confinement of Unit 4 Turbine Hall.

This crane, along with the other two being already on the site, will be used to remove the remaining wall panels damaged as a result of the collapse in February this year. These works are of high complexity, because a direct access to the panels is blocked by metal towers erected during elimination of the accident consequences in 1986. Following the removal of the damaged panels from behind the metal towers and their bringing down on the ground, they will be fragmented and transported out for disposal at the RWDF “Buryakovka”.

About 75% of dismantled constructions was fragmented. About 800 fragmented elements were transported to the Turbine Hall.

Works aimed on VS-2 opening closure and permanent sealing were completed.

The Contractor has provided a tentative schedule with the date of works completion on 3 months ahead of schedule. Completion of all work under the Contract is planned for March 2014.

Works on dismantling of the ChNPP II Generation Ventilation Stack (VS-2) were completed. 7 blocks with total weight of 330 tons were dismantled according to the Work Execution Plan.

Works on fragmentation of the dismantled blocks are underway within the specially prepared areas. The dismantled fragments are transported to Power Unit No.3 Turbine Hall by special vehicles for temporary storage. 440 fragments have been already placed at the Turbine Hall.

November 22, 2013, the following block (В6-1) of ChNPP II Generation Ventilation Stack (VS-2) of 18 tons was dismantled.

Mt. Alexander Plotnikov, Ukrtransbud’s Project Manager of VS-2 dismantling noted that one of the major difficulties in this project was to recruit personnel of appropriate qualification. This difficulty was caused, first of all, by the fact that overhead works were anticipated. Besides, all the activities are carried out within radiation fields and due to this comprehensive medical examination in the Research Centre of Radiation Medicine must be conducted.

Within special area the earlier dismantled blocks are being cut. The fragments are moved to Unit 3 Turbine Hall for temporary storage.

The monitored parameters of radiation conditions do not exceed design-based reference levels.

After State Architectural and Construction Inspectorate had issued permit to perform activities for “Reconstruction of ChNPP Unit 4 Turbine Hall enclosing contour between axes 46-52 and А-B” the physical works were commenced.

The personnel have been mobilized to the site where activities will be carried out; the road surfacing is being improved within the local area of Shelter Object; the access ramps and runways as well as a ground for framework assembling are being arranged. The plant-manufacturer fabricates steelwork components of the turbine hall roofing spatial module.

Ukrderzhbudekspertyza issued positive experts’ conclusion for Detailed Design of “Reconstruction of ChNPP Unit 4 Turbine Hall enclosing contour between axes 46-52 and А-B” developed by Kyiv Institute “Energoproekt” and this detailed design was approved by SSE ChNPP order in September 2013.

In November 2013, based on the tender results a contract for civil works was concluded with Ukrtransbud Corporation.

The activities associated with reconstruction of enclosing contour of ChNPP Unit 4 Turbine Hall are scheduled to be completed by the end of current year.

For information. On February 12, 2013, Unit 4 Turbine Hall wall structures and some part of light roof collapsed partially. The area of damage made about 600 m2. From February 12 till 20, two commissions worked to investigate the causes of incident, they analyzed the situation due to which the building structures collapsed and issued their propositions for eliminating consequences.
