On August 20, 2021, the license was issued to Chornobyl NPP for implementation of the activity in the field of processing and storage of radioactive waste, existing and generating during the Shelter Object transformation into ecologically safe system (operation of the Confinement and Shelter Object complex) in presence of the managers from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Commission. This license will ensure the regulatory control for the ongoing operation of the complex and subsequent transformation of the Shelter Object into environmentally safe site.

    This event was preceded by a huge scope of works, performed by Chornobyl NPP specialists, including rectifying of the deficiencies identified as a result of pilot operation of NSC Commissioning Stage-1 and implementation of the recommendations, specified in the Act of inspection survey, and others. In addition, the licensing became possible after the State Nuclear and Radiation Safety expertise of a set of documents, the main of which was the "Safety Analysis Report for the NSC-SO complex", the inspection to verify the completeness and validity of the information contained in the submitted documents and the ability of the SSE “Chornobyl NPP” to perform the declared activity, the obtaining of the license for processing and storage of radioactive waste within the operation of the ChNPP’s Confinement and Shelter Object complex.

    During the period from 16 to 19 March, Chornobyl NPP experts will be exchanging experience with WANO-MC member organizations on maintenance and repair of NPP equipment within the international online event. Invited experts to the event include representatives of operating organizations and nuclear power plants from other regional WANO Centres..

    The relevance of sharing experience in the field of maintenance and repair management at NPPs was fully validated in the WANO report “Gap Analysis of Maintenance Staff” published on the first day of the event..

    According to the Decree issued by SSE ChNPP, due to the absence of an increase in the incidence of respiratory disease COVID-19 among the employees, starting from December 1, 2020, the downtime mode at the enterprise is terminated and normal mode of operation is resumed in accordance with the schedules - with strict adherence of «SSE ChNPP Action Plan to prevent the spread of COVID-19».

    The resumption of familiarization visits for citizens from all countries to the territory of the plant's industrial site will be announced additionally.

    On November 18, Chornobyl NPP stepped to a new quality level of spent nuclear fuel management: in a new storage facility (ISF-2), the first double-wall shielded canister (DWC) filled with 93 spent fuel assemblies was placed for the one-hundred-year storage.

    This activity was carried out by ChNPP personnel under the expert supervision of the IAEA, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and Holtec.

    This event was presented by SSE ChNPP acting Director General. Mr. Volodymyr Pieskov, during a media scrum held on ISF-2 site.

    Deputy Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, Mr. Maksym Shevchuk, thanked the international partners, who are the donors of the Nuclear Safety Account administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, for financial assistance to Ukraine during ChNPP decommissioning and Shelter transformation into an environmentally safe system. In addition, he wished Chornobyl NPP complete the hot tests and continue to operate ISF-2 successfully and trouble-free.

    Today, on the 26th of April, on the 29th anniversary of Chernobyl disaster, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko visited the ChNPP industrial site.

    Together with his attendants the President paid tribute to the memory of all those, who sacrificed their lives and health having saved the world from the severest technogenic radiation accident in the history of mankind.

    Petro Poroshenko visited the Shelter Observation Pavilion, where he was familiarized with details of 1986 accident consequences elimination process and the current state of activities on Shelter Object transformation into an environmentally safe system, and left the note in the Distinguished Visitors' Book.
