Since February 6, the consolidated emergency repair teams of Chornobyl NPP specialists have been involved in elimination of the consequences of russian attacks on critical infrastructure facilities in Kyiv, which led to interruptions in electricity, heat and water supply, as well as sewage system in the capital.  Serhii Tarakanov General Director of the Chornobyl NPP informed about that.  

    According to him, in the context of a full-scale war in the country, there is a shortage of workers in the blue-collar professions, as a significant number of them are currently defending the State. At the same time, the significant scale of damage to Kyiv's energy facilities requires the involvement of considerable human resources.

    During the January, the newly appointed Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, Hryhorii Ishchenko, got acquainted with the work of subordinate enterprises, primarily with the activities of the Chornobyl NPP, the CERWM and the Radon enterprise.

    In particular, at the industrial site of the Chornobyl NPP, Mr Ishchenko visited the dry Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-2), the Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant, the facilities of the Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management, the turbine halls of the first and second generations of the plant, as well as ChNPP’s Units 1, 2, and 3 where decommissioning activities are being carried out.

    On November 19, IAEA officers officially handed over keys to two ambulances to Chornobyl NPP Medical Unit and Varash City Hospital. The handover took place in the presence of representatives from the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the administration of Chornobyl NPP, Chornobyl’s medical personnel, and doctors from Varash Hospital. One vehicle will serve the Chornobyl site, while the other will be assigned to the Varash Hospital.

    In a video message, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi highlighted that this donation is part of the agency’s commitment to strengthening the critical healthcare infrastructure and emergency response capabilities of Chornobyl and Rivne NPPs. “Personnel at Ukraine’s nuclear facilities face enormous stress. By reinforcing critical healthcare and mental health support, we are investing in their resilience and in nuclear safety and security,” Grossi said.

     On October 3, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant hosted its second on-site meeting to review potential locations for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) proposed by Chornobyl NPP and discuss land allocation matters.

    Representatives from the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM), specialists from NNEGC Energoatom and Chornobyl NPP visited several locations within the Exclusion Zone and around the plant. This was followed by a technical discussion on the suitability of these sites for future SMR construction.

    On 11 July, the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA) Assembly meeting of donors took place in London. ChNPP’s Acting Director General Serhii Martynov took part in the meeting. 

    The discussion which was held mainly online focused on the energy and environmental issues of Ukraine, in particular the ones caused by the armed aggression of the russian federation. 

    At the meeting, Norway and Great Britain announced their additional contributions worth over UAH 200 million (EUR 5 million) to the Account.

    On June 29, II international conference “Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment: Ukrainian context” was held.

    The conference was arranged at the discretion of MC “Agency of Regional Development” of Slavutych Municipal Council, Vyshhorod district, Kyiv region, with participation of “Alpha Atom Association, Institute for Safety Problems of NPPs, State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, Ukrainian Nuclear Society, and other companies.

    The main objective of the event was to facilitate the formation of global dialogue about liquid radioactive waste management and to discuss urgent problematic issues of liquid radwaste processing, in order to ensure safe and sustainable future for Ukraine and European Union.

    The conference was held in a mixed format of on-line and off-line speeches and discussions. 90 people were involved in the event. 12 speakers delivered their presentations.

    A meeting chaired by Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, took place at Chornobyl NPP on June 2.

    The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the Head of the State Exclusion Zone Management Agency of Ukraine Yevhen Kramarenko, ChNPP Acting Director General Valeriy Seyda and the heads of leading enterprises of the Exclusion Zone.

    On August 20, 2021, the license was issued to Chornobyl NPP for implementation of the activity in the field of processing and storage of radioactive waste, existing and generating during the Shelter Object transformation into ecologically safe system (operation of the Confinement and Shelter Object complex) in presence of the managers from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Commission. This license will ensure the regulatory control for the ongoing operation of the complex and subsequent transformation of the Shelter Object into environmentally safe site.

    This event was preceded by a huge scope of works, performed by Chornobyl NPP specialists, including rectifying of the deficiencies identified as a result of pilot operation of NSC Commissioning Stage-1 and implementation of the recommendations, specified in the Act of inspection survey, and others. In addition, the licensing became possible after the State Nuclear and Radiation Safety expertise of a set of documents, the main of which was the "Safety Analysis Report for the NSC-SO complex", the inspection to verify the completeness and validity of the information contained in the submitted documents and the ability of the SSE “Chornobyl NPP” to perform the declared activity, the obtaining of the license for processing and storage of radioactive waste within the operation of the ChNPP’s Confinement and Shelter Object complex.
