The operational and technical documentation, agreed with the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate taking into account the conclusions of the state nuclear and radiation safety expertise , sets the operating life time of the containment structure of the Shelter object until October 31, 2029, with the possibility of its extension subject to safety justification for the purpose of safe preparation and dismantling of the unstable structures. As of the current time, the containment structure of the Shelter object performs its functions in accordance with the technological regulations of the NSC-Shelter complex.

    Despite the fact that, as a result of the strike by a drone on 14 February 2025 and the aftermath of the fire-fighting operation, the arch of the New Safe Confinement (NSC)—which was constructed to ensure the containment of radioactive materials in the case if the containment structure of the ‘Shelter’ facility failed, lost its ability to fully seal its internal volume, its protective shell continues to partially fulfill its key role — the ecological isolation of the destroyed power unit from the surrounding environment. 

    These days, several events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster are taking place simultaneously in the Austrian capital. The Director General of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Serhii Tarakanov, participated in the events, emphasizing the unity of Ukraine’s position on the international stage, as well as the key role of Chornobyl NPP in ensuring nuclear safety, preserving memory, and fostering international cooperation, even 40 years after the disaster.

    On April 13, 2026, the photo exhibition “Chornobyl 1986–2026: Memory and Resilience” opened at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. The event became part of Ukraine’s international agenda within the framework of the 10th Review Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety. The exhibition was implemented by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the International Organizations in Vienna, with the support of the Government of Norway.

    The International Atomic Energy Agency (the IAEA) should introduce sanctions against the Russian nuclear company “Rosatom”, which provides technical and political cover-up of the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP and was involved in the seizure of the Chornobyl NPP in 2022.

    This was stated by the Chornobyl NPP Director General Serhii Tarakanov at the briefing with representatives of Greenpeace Ukraine, Greenpeace Germany, other European Greenpeace organizations, as well as journalists from leading Ukrainian and European media outlets who visited the ChNPP industrial site.

    School students and preschool children in Slavutych will now have the opportunity to read authentic English fairy tales, stories, and adventure books – not simplified textbooks, but real literature loved by children around the world.

    Today, Chornobyl NPP handed over two large boxes of English-language children’s books to the Education Department of the Slavutych City Council. The books were collected and sent to Ukrainian children by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This gift is intended for children of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers.

    The SSE "Chornobyl NPP", the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the French companies Bouygues and Vinci, which were part of the Novarka consortium, continue their cooperation to restore the New Safe Confinement (NSC) functionality.

    According to Serhii Tarakanov, Director General of Chornobyl NPP, over the past few months Bouygues and Vinci have been working on proposals for the NSC restoration, including an assessment of the time frame, cost and radiation exposure to personnel.

    These issues were discussed by the management of the Chornobyl NPP, representatives of the EBRD and French companies at a working meeting on March 9, on the eve of the Assembly meeting of the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account, which will be held on March 31 in London, where an interim report on potential restoration options is planned to be presented, along with the results of an assessment of the damaged area.

    On March 7, as part of the medical assistance program for operational personnel of Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants, the Chornobyl NPP received a new shipment of humanitarian aid from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

    The aid consisted of 150 single beds, supplied with mattresses and protective covers. These beds will be used to arrange rest areas for the personnel who ensure the continuous operation of the plant's facilities and perform important tasks related to the power units decommissioning, radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management, and to improve their conditions in the Exclusion Zone during rotational work at the industrial site.

    The State Specialised Enterprise Chornobyl NPP has signed a contract for the development of detailed design documentation for the reconstruction of parts of the Deaerator Stack and the Turbine Hall of the Shelter Object that protrude beyond the enclosing perimeter of the New Safe Confinement (NSC). A consortium comprising of UTEM-ENGINEERING, the Institute for Nuclear Safety Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the State Research Institute of Building Structures, and the Design and Research Institute of the Security Service of Ukraine has been appointed as a Contractor for the works.

    The activity is financed by contributors to the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA) through its Administrator, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), within the framework of the project “Priority Projects to Support the Restoration of Safety, Security and Infrastructure at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant” implemented under Grant Agreement No. 02 dated 08 February 2024.
